2. Therefore a wise prince, marching the whole day, does not go far from his baggage waggons1. Although he may have brilliant prospects2 to look at, he quietly remains3 (in his proper place), indifferent to them. How should the lord of a myriad4 chariots carry himself lightly before the kingdom? If he do act lightly, he has lost his root (of gravity); if he proceed to active movement, he will lose his throne.

是以圣人终日行不离辎重,虽有荣观,燕处超然。

奈何万乘之主而以身轻天下?

轻则失根,躁则失君。

【译文】

重是轻的根本,静是动的主宰。因此,圣人处理任何事务都不脱离他的承载、供养者;虽有荣华显贵的地位权能,却能坦荡从容,超然处之。为什么大国的君主要强逞己能而轻举天下?轻举天下就会失去自身存在的根本,狂躁施政就会失去主控的权能。
